jan 1, 1707 - Chris lag in
Todesbanden
Description:
One of Bach's earliest suviving cantatas. Consists of a set of variations on the venerable Lutheran chorale Christ lag in Todesbanden, which had been adapted from teh eleventh-century Gregorian Easter sequence Victimae paschali laudes and which we have seen used earlier as the basis for pieces by Samuel Scheidt and Johann Schein. The text of the Cantata is exactly that of the chorale, its seven sectiosn corresponding to the seven stanzas of the EAster hymn by Martin Luther
