jan 1, 1581 - Dialogo della musica antica et della moderna

Description:

Galilei reserved his strongest criticism for the madrigalists. Although he composed some madrigals himself, he rejected their claim that they were imitating nature in their works. He condemned the word games so often found in them. Galilei had a certain point in ridiculing "madrigalisms," which are like plays on words, puns, and wit. We often react to a madrigalism, even a serious one, the way we do to a joke: We are satisfied when we "get it." Galilei criticized the madrigalists, noting that they "do not realize that if any of the famous orators of old had ever once declaimed two words in such a fashion they would have moved their hearers to laughter and contempt at once, and would have been ridiculed and despised by them as stupid, abject, and worthless men."
