The last few years
have been a bit bumpy
Johnny Depp
INTERVIEW
Description:
On the 21st floor of a Las Vegas skyscraper Johnny Depp is surveying the vast sweep of Sin City spread out before him.
He’s lucky to be here, as his most recent role, playing Tonto in Disney’s $250 million remake of The Lone Ranger, almost cost him his life.
‘My horse had it in for me,’ he laughs. ‘I’m not sure it was an accident.’
Although Depp had a horse-riding double, he wanted to do as many of the action scenes as possible.
He was riding his mount, Scout, a 15.1-hands, 11-year-old American Paint Horse, over rugged terrain at full gallop when his saddle slipped and he took a tumble, grabbing the horse’s mane as he was dragged along behind it for 25 yards.
‘We’d been running the horses pretty hot that day and went down a couple of paths. That all worked out fine until we changed paths in order to get closer to the camera car.
'Scout decided to jump over a few obstacles. So yeah, user error. You would expect to be riddled with fear or adrenaline, but I saw everything very clearly, which was the horse’s muscular front legs moving at dangerous speed.
