oct 7, 1944 - Sonderkommando uprising
Description:
Members of the special command
(Sonderkommando) in Birkenau, Jewish
prisoners forced to work in the gas chambers
and crematoria, launched an uprising. They
managed to blow up one of the crematoria
and kill several SS guards. The revolt was quickly defeated, and SS officers murdered the participants, as well as four female prisoners who had smuggled gunpowder to them. John Wiernicki, a Polish non-Jewish Auschwitz survivor, painted this depiction of the uprising in 1998.
