In the 1880s the French attempted to build the panama canal but failed and canceled the project. Then in 1904 the US took over the project. The objective was to build a fifty mile long canal through the isthmus of Panama which connected the Atlantic and pacific oceans. The chief engineer was John Stevens who used innovated techniques and redesigned the canal from a sea-level canal to a lock canal. The project took ten years and opened in 1914.
