The Trucial States had been an informal British protectorate ever since 7 emirates in the Middle East signed the first of many treaties with Britain in 1820. Starting in 1968, the UK and the Sultan of Abu Dhabi, one of the states, agreed that the UK shouldn't interfere with the emirates. On December 1, 1971, Britain pulled out, ending the Trucial States after 151 years of existence. The next day, 6 of the emirates joined to become the United Arab Emirates, with Ras Al Khaimah joining in February 1972. The UAE in its nearly 50 years of existence, has risen to become one of the most prosperous and economically driven countries in the entire world, with oil being a major player for them.
