nov 8, 1923 - Munich Putsch

Description:

The Munich Putsch was Hitlers attempt to take power for the Nazis by force.

Hitler and the SA interrupted a beer hall meeting where Gustav von Kahr (the head of the Bavarian government) was speaking.
Hitler fired a bullet into the ceiling and declared that he was taking over Bavaria and would then march on Berlin and take over the whole of Germany. He locked away Kahr and other officials in the hall and around Munich, the SA took control of government buildings and arrested officials.
General Ludendorff - a war hero - also supported Hitler.
Kahr and the other captured officials agreed to support Hitler but Khar later contacted the minister for education (the only cabinet member not at the beer hall) and mobilised an armed police response.
The police confronted the nazis and the resulting shoot out killed 16 Nazis and 4 police officers. Hitler dislocated his arm and fled (later claiming he carried a child to safety) and was later arrested with other Nazi and SA leaders

He was put on trial which he used as an opportunity to speak to the whole of Germany due to intense media coverage. Having impressed the judges he was sentenced to only 5 years in prison which he used to write Mein Kampf and to organise his ideas in preparation to use the system to gain power.
