feb 24, 1920 - DAP Becomes The NSDAP
Description:
Adolf Hitler was sent to investigate the german workers party in May 1919 by the army. The party appealed to him due to its anti-Semitic, anti-Marxist and imperial (anti- treaty of Versailles) rhetoric which appealed to him (especially as an ex-soldier).
Hitler grew up in Austria-Hungary and having failed to get into art college in Vienna he crossed the border into Munich - joining the army during world war 1 and earning medals for bravery.
His oratory and charisma captured a lot of party members in the Munich beer hall meetings and he was made chief of propaganda in early 1920 - buying a newspaper and putting out propaganda as well as organising large public meetings. He chose the swastika as their symbol for its simplicity, meaning of well-being and because it was eye catching.
The name was changed from the German Workers Party to the National Socialist German Workers Party and membership grew by 2000 in a year (almost doubling).
Hitler became leader in the summer of 1921 and founded the SA stormtroopers who were the Nazi party's personal army. They guarded Nazi meetings and disrupted other party meetings. They wore brown with Nazi armbands and had a reputation for violence.
