nov 9, 1918 - The German Republic Declared
Description:
The Kaiser's abdication and the November revolution led by revolting workers (who were inspired in part by the Russian Revolution of the previous year) meant that political leaders had to put a democratic system in place quickly
Scheidemann of the SPD declared Germany a republic in order to keep the SPD at the front of the revolution (to the fury of Ebert), as did Liebknecht of the Spartacist league and Ebert (leader of the SPD) was appointed Chancellor by Max of Baden (the existing Chancellor and the bearer of the abdication).
The next day Ebert formed an executive council with Haase the leader of the other social democratic party and gained the support of the army and a representative signed an armistice with the allies to end the first world war on the 11th.
