The German foreign P.M. sent a note to the Mexican government that said that if Mexico attacked the U.S., they would have German support for a Mexican reconquest of the U.S.'s Southwest. Unfortunately, for the Germans, this was intercepted by the British and was reported back to the U.S. This infuriated the U.S. and helped prepare them for war.
