Alexander I died in 1825; nevertheless, a group of army officers led a revolt known as the Decembrist Revolt. While fighting Napoleon in Western Europe the soldiers learned about constitutions and other reforms they now wanted. As the new czar, Nicolas I, cracked down on citizens seeking liberal reforms. In order to do this, he banned book that would spread liberal ideas, and used police spies to find people with liberal ideas.
