12h 58min, feb 25, 1990 y - Nicaragua election (after agreed ceasefire)

Description:

The Contras remained armed but the Sandinista's agreed to elections to be held on 25th February 1990, expecting an easy victory given their control of the government and its treasury. This in addition to the Contra's refusal to disarm, convinced the Sandinistas that stability and economic recovery would not be achieved without conforming to US aims.
USA backed 14 Sandinista opposition parties to campaign.
Chamorro was popular, and pro-American. Was given over $1 million in financial support from the USA and Venezuela contributed. This contributed to her victory. She removed the Contras thereby leaving the Sandinistas without opposition, and ending the civil war.
US politicians withdrew in 1992, arguing the Sandinistas covertly controlled the economy.
The economy would take decades to recover.
