Pro-Solidarity government was formed and led by Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Key positions remained in the hands of the Communists in an attempt to maintain the peace and achieve reconciliation. However by the end of 1989, Poland was a multi-party state with a coalition government dominated by Solidarity. Poland's successful transition to democracy was soon seen in other Eastern European countries.
