new knowledge and technology emerged from japan by the end of the ninteenth century. these new technologies came from europe and spread to japan. by thw 19000 the tokugawa shogunate had ruled japan for 200 years. in the summer of 1853 commodore matthew perry ariveved in edo bay with an ameerican fleet of four worships. soon sunder military pressure, japan agreeded to the treay of kanagawa.
