1670s - the Italian physician and naturalist M. Malpighi and the English naturalist N. Gru described “pouches, or bubbles” in different plant organs and showed that the cellular structure was widespread in plants. The cells were depicted in his drawings by the Dutch microscopist A. Leeuwenhoek. He was the first to discover the world of unicellular organisms - he described bacteria and protists (ciliates).3
