nov 17, 1970 - First lunar rover

Description:

The first successful lunar rover, called the Lunokhod 1, landed on the moon. It was driven by soviet union operators with a remote, travelling 6 miles in 10 months, which is a distance that it took the mars rover, Opportunity, six years to reach. The United States and the USSR were head to head with space travel competition. The soviet union was set on getting a successful moon landing, but after multiple test failures which included a deadly launch explosion in 1968, they decided to focus on other moon related missions instead. This was a proven successful mission for the soviet union as they landed the first properly working lunar rover.
