The first human spaceflight commenced in Russia within a Vostok 1 ship. Yuri Gagarin was the man that flew into space on this day. He was a soviet cosmonaut and pilot who ended up the first man in orbit, completing his orbital circuit 108 minute on the same day. Because of his revolutionary bravery and success, he was awarded many medals and titles post-flight, including the ‘Hero of the Soviet Union’. He became a world renowned celebrity, being celebrated in newspapers around the world. He gained a natural reputation as a celebrity and was known for his ‘charismatic smile’. This was a huge success for the soviet union and human spaceflight as a whole. It proved that human life could be sustainable within space-bound aircraft, leading to things in the future such as the moon landing, happening only 8 years later.
