The Battle of Antietam, a multi-day battle, was a sweeping Union victory, and it showed the downfalls of the Confederacy loud and clear. The South had a struggling economy, since most of the industry lay in the North, and they could hardly export or import anything because of Union sea blockades. The Southern army was hungry, tired, poorly clothed and in overall poor conditions. The North was far stronger and had better numbers, and things for the South were not looking great.
