may 30, 1854 - Kansas-Nebraska Act

Description:

The Act was passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30, 1854. Act was supported as a result of a Transcontinental railroad running through the north. It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their territories. The act essentially repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´because the territories of both Kansas and Nebraska would decide of slavery by voting despite existing north of the line.
