jan 2, 1786 - The Treaty of Paris establishes American independence

Description:

This treaty, sent to Congress by American negotiators John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and John Jay, formally ended the Revolutionary War. It was one of the most advantageous treaties negotiated, up to that point, by the United States. Two crucial clauses were British recognition of the independence of the United States and the demarcation of borders, which would allow American expansion westward as far as the Mississippi River. There are two original duplicates of the treaty in the Original American file of the United States National Archives and Records Administration. They are most easily distinguished from each other by the orientation of their seals, horizontal on one and vertical on the other.
