The Great Awakening, a religious revival influenced by Enlightenment thinkers in Europe, spread across the colonies. The two most famous Great Awakening preachers were John Edwards and George Whitefield, the latter who was known for his powerful speaking ability. Before the Great Awakening religious fervor had been on a decline, but the Great Awakening helped to increase the piety of the colonists.
