may 25, 1619 - First slaves arrive in the New World 1619
Description:
The first ship of slaves arrives in Jamestown, on a Dutch ship. However, at this time most of the forced labor in the American colonies were still performed by indentured servants. Through the headright system, plantation owners were given 50 acres of land for every servant whose passage to the new world was paid. Slavery wouldn't become the primary form of forced labor until later in the 1600's
