The Econmienda system was a labor system developed by the Spanish to determine the status of Native Americans. It was a way of controlling the Natives. The Econmienda system was used to exact tribute from the natives in the form of gold or labor. The royal crown would give a specified number of Indians to a conquistador. The conquistador, in return, was expected to protect and Christianize the Indians.
