The Portuguese already had a safe and reliable route to India. They had to sail along the West African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope, but Columbus had a better idea. He proposed the question: "Why not sail west across the Atlantic instead of around the African continent?" That's exactly what he did but there was one problem.
