nov 9, 1998 - The New Level of FPS Narrative: Half-life

Description:

Half-Life, developed by Valve, was launched in 1998. The game was produced using the modified Quake 2 engine, and Valve worked on the narrative plot as well as the player's sense of immersion, which was very different from the design concept of previous fps games.

The original fps games were all about sensory experience, but Valve tried to break this confinement by bringing in a famous fiction writer to create a script for their game, using the script to create a seamless immersive experience.

The game has no checkpoints, no interludes, and no missions. The whole story is presented through real-time interactions that multiply the player's sense of immersion. This setting has led to a great deal of praise for Half-Life and the inclusion of the game in the Guinness Book of World Records for sales.

At the same time, Gabe Newell also made the same decision as Carmack to open up the source code of Half-Life. Absorbing mods from all sides to continue the life of this game, which was probably one of the smartest decisions Gabe Newell ever made in his life.
