mar 3, 1820 - Missouri Compromise
Description:
The Missouri Compromise was an effort taken by Congress to ease the political rivalries triggered by the request of Missouri that slavery be permitted. At the time, 22 states were evenly divided between slave states and free states. Allowing Missouri to be a slave state would upset the balance and create another nationwide conflict, possibly resulting in another civil war. In the end, the compromise switched Missouri to a slave state, and created Maine as a free state to not upset the balance.
