nov 1, 1980 - Battlezone Gives Life to FPS: Commercialization of FPS for the First Time

Description:

Some of the early concepts presented in Maze Wars and Spasim influenced the development of a number of games. By the 1980s, people were already consciously experimenting with first-person shooters.

One of the most popular was 1980's Battlezone on Atari 2600, a tank battle simulation game.

Despite a vector&line presentation, Battlezone was really much richer in detail and presentation.

As the picture shows, it uses basically black and green vector graphics, very simple environmental effects (such as volcanic eruptions), and an addictive, score-based game mode to encourage players to shoot as many enemy tanks as possible. As a result, it has been popular with "high score seekers" for a long time.
