aug 21, 1973 - Serendipity: Maze War and Spasim
Description:
Maze War is the first example of a first-person shooter, although the term has a very broad definition.
It's a simple black and white puzzle game where players can venture through a maze looking for other avatars represented by floating eyeballs. When you see another eyeball, you can shoot it to score points. Players are only allowed to navigate the maze in 90-degree increments of movement.
Around the same time, Jim Bowery released Spasim, a space flight simulator with a first-person perspective. Like Maze War, the action is slow and simple.
They may not fit into the current gaming mainstream, but few games have the cross-genre impact as Maze War.
