nov 6, 1860 - Election of 1860
Description:
The Election of 1860 was one of the most hot-topic elections in American history. It was between Republican Abraham Lincoln and Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge. Lincoln won by a landslide, getting 180 electoral votes while Breckinridge got only 72. Lincoln was very much anti-slavery, but believed that the federal government lacked the Constitutional power to outlaw it. Fear that Lincoln would ban slavery in the United States caused resistance from southern states. Eventually, all but three slave states seceded from the United States, creating high-tensions that caused the American Civil War.
