apr 7, 1848 - The Married Women Property Acts

Description:

This act was put into effect in order to protect the property that women held. “It shall be lawful for any married female to receive, by gift, grant devise or bequest, from any person other than her husband and hold to her sole and separate use, as if she were a single female, real and personal property, and the rents, issues and profits thereof, and the same shall not be subject to the disposal of her husband, nor be liable for his debts”. This means that when a woman gets married an inherited land, it’s no longer her husbands land but her own land which her husband does not have claim to.With the property they now could possess, they needed more money to support themselves, so women start to find work outside of their traditional roles.
