Description:

Luther challenged both Rome (Pope Leo X) and the Empire (Charles V/Charles I of Spain) by burning papal bull and not recanting at Diet of Worms. Hidden at Wartburg Castle by Frederick the Wise and translated the Bible into German. Left when peasant revolts rose in Wittenburg (1524-25).
Verdict of Worms was overturned (1526) and reaffirmed (1529) by the Diet of Spire. This led to a legal protest against the verdict which is where "Protestant" comes from.
