Acropolis = high city, location of some of the most important buildings and temples of the city.
This is the most famous because Athens was the most powerful city-state at this time.
West Pediment of Parthenon shows Athena battling Poseidon. They are vying for the honor to be the patron of the city. Poseidon strikes a rock and salt water from the sea emerges (gift of naval superiority) Athena offers an olive tree (land of prosperity) Modern greeks have re-planted a tree to represent Athena’s offering.
ktinos and Kallikrates were the architects. Used mathematics to create perfection through illusion by using subtle distortions.
Hardly any right angles.
Center of temple slightly higher to allow rainwater to run off edges

Entasis - slight bulge of a column at its center.
Columns on edges are slightly closer to create sense of even.
Triglyphs have to be in center of columns and also on edges. So
They adjusted the metopes.
