The battle of Anzio started with operation shingle which was a devised plan to push the German forces off of the Gustav line in Italy. The US General John P Lucas made it possible for the troops to land near Anzio & Nettuno. The battle lasted 4 months and nobody on either side seemed to be advancing or retreating. After thousands of troops started to die from this drawn out battle, the Allies finally had a breakthrough and in May of 1944. The significance of this battle was that it lead to the capture of Rome in Italy.Added to timeline:
