October 23rd 1942- The battle of El Alamein was the battle where the allies stopped the axis from advancing into Egypt. El Alamein is northwest of Cairo in a small region in North Africa. Bernard Montgomery became General for the British army after Claude Auchinleck, although he stopped Erwin Rommel in the first battle. The axis failed to take control of Egypt and the oil fields. This was important in the war because it was a turning point for the Western Desert campaign and the defense for the axis was slowly getting diminished.Added to timeline:
