feb 15, 1898 - Sinking of the USS Maine
Description:
A massive explosion of unknown origins sank the battleship USS Maine in Cuba’s Havana harbor, killing 260 of the fewer than 400 American crew members. Subsequent diplomatic failures to resolve the Maine matter coupled with the U.S. indignation over Spain’ brutal suppression of the Cuban rebellion, along with continued losses in American investments led to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in April 1898.
