The American battleship USS Maine exploded, killing 260 of the fewer 400 American crew members aboard in 1898. The Americans blamed the Spanish of the explosion even though they didn't have any evidence. This became one of the important reasons for the war begin. Later, in 1976 a team of American investigators concluded that the explosion was likely caused by a fire in the USS Maine, and not by a Spanish act of sabotage.Added to timeline:
