mar 6, 1857 - Dred Scott v Sanford
Description:
The case was brought before the courts by Dred Scott who was a slave in Missouri and resided in illinois ( a free state ). After returning to Missouri, he unsuccessfully sued the Missouri courts for his freedom, claiming that his residency in a free territory made him a free man. The Dred Scott v. Sanford case was a decision made by the Supreme Court and delivered by Chief Justice Roger Taney, stating that slaves were not citizens of the United States and could not sue in Federal courts.
