aug 18, 1590 - The Lost Colony of Roanoke

Description:

The Roanoke colony was just off the coast of North Carolina on Roanoke Island. Life during the first colony was so hard that all the men eventually went back to England. The second colony arrived 1587 comprised of 115 members and led by John White. A bit later a girl named Virginia Dare, White’s granddaughter, was born becoming the first child born in America (not including the Native American). The colony needed more supplies if they wanted to thrive so White went back to England to get some. When he returned, 3 years later in 1590, the colony had completely vanished with the only clues being “Croatoan” carved into a fence and “Cro” carved into a tree.
