jan 1, 1803 - Louisiana Purchase
Description:
In 1803 the United States purchased approximately 828,000,000 square miles of territory from France. This land purchase doubled the size of the young republic. Known as the Louisiana Purchase, the territory ran form the Mississippi River west to the Rocky Mountains and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. Thomas Jefferson was able to make the purchase for a mere $15 million dollars which is considered one of the most important achievements of his presidency.
