dec 7, 1941 - The Attack on Pearl Harbor

Description:

On December 7th, 1941, Japan declared war on the US by attacking Pearl Harbor, a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, which resulted in 2,400 dead, including civilians, and another 1,000 people wounded. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. The attack was the build-up of tensions between the US and Japan. The United States was particularly unhappy with Japan’s increasingly belligerent attitude toward China, while the Japanese government believed that the only way to solve its economic and demographic problems was to expand into its neighbor’s territory and take over its import market. American officials responded to this aggression with a barrage of economic sanctions and trade embargoes. They reasoned that without access to money, goods, and essentials like oil, Japan would have to subdue its expansionism. Instead, the sanctions made Japan more determined to expand, and to now, retaliate. Japan launched this attack in response to the US’s efforts in blockading Japan’s expansionism.
