dec 15, 1902 - Mark Rothko

Description:

He has been associated with the contemporary movement of Abstract Expressionism, despite the fact that on several occasions he expressed his rejection of the "alienating" category of abstract painter.1 In 1925 he began his career as a painter in New York in a self-taught way. Around 1940 he was doing a painting very similar to the work of Barnett Newman and Adolph Gottlieb, close to surrealism and full of biomorphic forms. From 1947 his style changed and he began to paint large pictures with thin layers of color. Over the years, most of his compositions took the form of two confronting rectangles with edges blurred by glazes.
