aug 21, 1831 - Nat Turners Revolt

Description:

Nat turner lead the first and only successful slave revolt in US history. On august 21st after a solar eclipse he and some fellow slaves murdered their owners and headed into jerusalem, the local town, in search of an armory. Their group amounted to about 75 fugitive slaves and they killed about 60 white people in two days. They were then surrounded by the state militia who killed about 100 including innocent bystanders. This revolt terrified white slave owners who, in response, strengthened slave codes to absolutely inhumane levels. The increased repression of slaves only fueled abolitionist's anger and increased pre-war tensions.
