Description:
In Springfield, Illinois there were two reports of a white woman being assaulted by black men. A mob of angry white men gathered outside the court but unable to attack the two black men who had been arrested they lynched two black passerbyers, they the continued their rampage by burning down the houses of black families and destroying black owned businesses. After destroying everything in springfield they continued to attack small black communities on the outskirts of springfield. In the end six black people had been shot and killed, two lynched, and about two thousand black people were driven out of springfield because of the damage. Later George Richardson one of the two black men arrested had been wrongly identified and was released.
