feb 12, 1909 - NAACP is founded

Description:

After the continued practice of lynching in the south and the race riot of illinois a group of white liberals called for a meeting about racial justices about 60 people came including prominent figures like, W.E.B duBois, and Ida B. Wells-Barnett. The main goal of the NAACP at the beginning was to protect and uphold the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. The NAACP set up their office in New York in 1910 and began releasing a newspaper called the Crisis. The Crisis became the voice of the harlem renaissance because that's where the majority of black writers were getting published. The NAACP also established legal prominence by winning a legal battle against Oklahoma's grandfather clause. Membership grew rapidly from 9,000 in 1917 to 90,0000 in 1919.
