20h 9min, jul 18, 1863 y - Fort Wagner

Description:

On June 11th Gilmore unsuccessfully attacked Fort Wagner but was later reinforced and made plans to attack again. The 54th Mass Infantry (regiment of all black soldiers captured the outer rifle pits and killed Robert Shaw. The 54th Mass Infantry then entered into the Fort and went into head to head combat with the Confederate soldiers. The garrison and the fort were hardly damaged by the Union bombardment, thus the regiment almost completely being killed off and the Union forces losing the battle. This battle was very important because it proved that the African American soldiers could excel in battle and could hold their own. It also led to the March to the Sea that dismantled the South.
