Fort Donelson was the battle that occurred after the Union had capture Fort Henry. Ulysses S. Grant then turned his attention towards Fort Donelson. The Union forces moved into the Fort because it provided a key gateway for the Confederacy and it would allow them to take complete hold of the area. The Confederate forces under Brigadier General John Floyd failed to break the Union line and surrendered. This victory for the Union was very important because it ensured that Kentucky would stay in the Union and ensure they could advance further through Tennessee and into the next battle of Shiloh.
