The Spanish American War officially ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and liberated Cuba after a conflict between the US and Spain. The War started after the USS Maine mysteriously exploded and the US blamed it on the Spanish. The whole entire country was already stirred into a frenzy because of William Hearst who was a journalist who spiked everything up to make the nation become anti-Spain. McKinley, the current President, had given the OK for the war and the US and Spain had declared war on each other. The US began immediately by sending in Commodore Dewey to attack Spanish ships in the Manila, then they also began to invade other Spanish colonial islands like Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. The war was relatively simple and effective for the US because of the heroics of the Rough Riders and Teddy Roosevelt. On December 10th 1898, the Treaty of Paris was signed that officially ended the war.
