20h 59min, dec 5, 1865 y - Thirteenth Amendment ratified: December 6th 1865

Description:

After the Civil War ended, the United States government wanted to create an amendment that would officially abolish slavery, because President Lincoln believed that the Emancipation Proclamation was only a temporary measure at the time for slaves living outside of the Unions control in the war. So, after many debates in congress, the United States government decided to use the 1864 election and Lincoln’s overwhelmingly large victory to platform for the “complete and utter destruction of slavery”. After winning the election, republicans set their plans into action and the ratification process was very smooth other than almost all Democrats claiming states needed their rights again. The Thirteenth Amendment was ratified on December 6th, 1865 and officially abolished the institution of slavery in the United States.
