may 8, 1820 - Missouri Compromise
Description:
The Missouri Compromise was a heavily debated topic between the North and South states before the Civil War. The tensions became extreme when Missouri tried to admit to the Union as a slave state. This was heavily debated because Missouri being a slave state would destroy the balance between slave states and free states, so Maine was admitted as a free state while Missouri was granted becoming a slave state. This led to an amendment that drew a line across the Louisiana Purchase territory separating the slave states from the free states.
