jan 16, 1919 - Eighteenth Amendment

Description:

The Eighteenth Amendment established the era of prohibition, which banned the production, transportation, and sale of alcohol in the United States. The Volstead Act provided more detail about which kinds of alcohol were banned and set methods to enforce the amendment. The Eighteenth Amendment turned out to be a failure because many people still drank in secret clubs, which found ways around the amendment. There was also a rise in organized crime because alcohol had to be kept secret. Therefore, the 18th amendment was repealed in 1933 by the 21st amendment.
